What must we do in order to be kind and good? For some people, this comes almost naturally. For others, it’s a struggle. Some days the struggle is mine. And there are many reasons why I struggle be it lack of sleep or I’ve just had enough with the situation or person.
It doesn’t matter what my problem is though, I am called to be full of kindness and goodness and to share it with others. Sometimes I think I’m overly concerned with how I feel about things. What does how I feel have to do with doing what I know to be the right thing? I rarely feel like walking at 6:00 am with my husband, but I do it. St. Ignatius said that when we make a plan, we should follow through with it, no matter our feelings. Imagine if we let our children grow up only doing what they wanted to do based on their feelings.
As followers of Christ, we are called to rise above temporary feelings and do what is right. It is most important to treat others as we want to be treated. That’s not my idea, Jesus said it, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself, (Mt 22:39b).” I like being treated with kindness and goodness, so I will do my best to treat others the same way.
