We sang this song at Mass last Sunday. As soon as it began I was taken back to a retreat the summer of 2000 in Atlanta, GA with 1200 teens. I wasn’t a teen, but the leader for a group of about 40 of us. On Saturday night we had a powerful time of adoring Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, worship music and prayer. I knelt for what felt like hours on the rocky ground under the tent, with a teen next to me, rocking back and forth, alternately sobbing and lifting hands in prayer trying to make sense of life and how to be holy, faithful, and righteous in life.
These words, “Take my heart and form it, Take my mind transform it, Take my will, conform it to Yours, to Yours, Oh Lord” these words are the answer as to how to be holy, faithful and righteous.
Music is so powerful. It evokes strong memories and feelings in me, often unexpected and unbidden. It’s one of the few times that I reach for tissues.
