I remember all those things as summer ended and a new school year began. As a child, I always thought September was when the new year really began. Sure the calendar said January 1 was the start of a new year but what happened new in January? Nothing at all. I still think that the start of a new school year is more of a time to begin again than January. I suppose that is due partly to the fact that my job is tied to the school year and my husband is a teacher.
We had the most wonderful summer. There were many blessings, big and small, and my gratitude is outdone only by God’s continual generosity.
But now it’s time to settle down and pick up some things that are staring at me every day, begging to be crossed off the to do list. It’s time to make new plans and move forward on commitments. Here’s my list for September:
Adoration once a week
Read: Who Does He Say You Are? by Colleen C. Mitchell; Prayer, Our Deepest Longing by Fr. Ronald Rolheiser
Complete a Whole30 (with my husband) from September 1 to 30. Yes, there are birthdays; we’ve had cake before, we won’t die if don’t have it this time, we can have it another time.
10,000 steps a day; bike ride 3x/week; gym 3x/week
Focus on gratitude!
Outline a book and complete a rough draft of at least 1 chapter
Update my website
Set up the organization idea for the kitchen
Make a new jean skirt
Write my talk for January Magnificat
There’s probably a few more things that are on my list, but this is a good start. What I learned over this summer is that I like structure and organization. It’s more than a need to have lists and it’s not about wanting control. Rather, the need to have a plan for each day, to have some set routines, and accountability help me stay focused. And it lessens my anxiety. At various times in my life I have suffered from anxiety, often due to stress. Now, it is less from stress than from being a woman of a certain age. And while I can’t do anything about my age, I certainly can be aware of what helps me lower my anxiety level and what can raise it.
I’m ready to start the new year today, September 1st. Happy New Year!
