Wednesday Wisdom

Reading the daily Mass readings is a very positive influence on my day. It sets my mind up right away to focus on something positive, gives me something to think about as I go about my day and often times reminds me of something I need to remember.

June 13th’s first reading was a great reminder. This verse stuck with me, “But the one who gives us security with you in Christ and who anointed us is God; he has also put his seal upon us and given the Spirit in our hearts as a first installment” and I’ve been turning it over in my head and praying about it since I read it.

We have total security because God has put his seal upon us, given us his Son and the Holy Spirit. And the Holy Spirit is just the beginning, it’s the “first installment.”  How many times do we feel sad or hopeless or overwhelmed? For me, that happens when I focus on myself and how I need to do so many things and I am so busy and the list goes on.

On the Feast of Pentecost, we asked for a renewal of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in our Church and in ourselves. The gifts are in us, we can ask in prayer to know which gifts we need to use to serve God. Be ready though, when we ask, he answers and it’s not a good idea to say no to God. This is why this verse struck me, I do not need to worry and neither do you, God is with us. We are his. Sometimes we need to be reminded and scripture is one of the best ways to seek God.

Daily reading of scripture lifts me out of myself and turns my mind toward truth, beauty, and goodness. Scripture lifts my eyes up to focus on something greater than self. Scripture reminds me of God’s plan.

If you are interested in reading the daily Mass readings there are many ways to do that. The easiest is to go to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops readings, scroll down to the bottom of the readings and add your email to get the readings to your inbox!

There are also monthly booklets with reflections and other prayers that you can purchase, both hard copies and electronic versions.
